If the data from a website is accessible via the third party AI platform, presumably the service that website performs can also largely move to the AI platform? At that point, A) what's the benefit to those websites in having their data accessed in this way? and B) what's the benefit to searchers when all these websites go bankrupt next year?
Great questions, and you're highlighting a real challenge. For A, the benefit to websites will depend on how AI platforms handle attribution and whether they drive meaningful traffic or offer new models of value (like partnerships or licensing). For B, it's true that if content creators aren't rewarded, the ecosystem risks shrinking. The future likely requires a balance where AI platforms support sustainable content creation, similar to how search engines evolved with SEO and ads. This is an ongoing discussion in the industry.
I'm not really seeing a discussion. I'm seeing wanton copgright theft and court cases. Search engines don't share their revenue with other sites so there's no model there that AI platforms can similarly adopt either. There's simply no precedent for any of this, and the Nash equilibrium is not a balance where AI platforms sustainably reward content producers.
